The Champagne Pools

The Champagne Pools are rock pools at sea level on K'gari's east coast, reached by a short boardwalk. Tides decide how you get there and what the pools look like.

The Champagne Pools at a glance

The Champagne Pools are a set of natural rock pools on K'gari (Fraser Island), at the Middle Rocks on the east coast. Waves wash over the rock rim and push water and foam into the pools. That fizzing effect gives them their name. A boardwalk leads from the track to the rock pools.

The pools lie about 21.2 km north of Dundubara. Getting there means driving on the beach, so a 4WD, a vehicle access permit and a look at the tide table all come first. This guide is independent and is not run by the park service or any tour operator.

Tides at the Champagne Pools

Two separate questions: when can you drive, and when do the pools foam.

TideWhat it means here
Low tideBest for driving the Eastern Beach scenic drive, within 2 hours either side. The steps down to the beach are steep and slippery.
Mid tideThe level QPWS describes for the foaming effect in the pools
High tideAvoid driving on the beach for 2 hours either side

There is no general rule that you may only swim at low tide, and low tide is not automatically safe. QPWS says to swim only when conditions are safe. Work out the day's tide table first, then judge the water when you arrive.

Our pick: a small-group day from Hervey Bay

Our take: an experienced guide takes care of the beach driving and tide timing, and the barge and park fees are part of the price.

Getting there and walking the boardwalk

What the trip involves from the beach to the pools.

The drive

QPWS says the Eastern Beach scenic drive is accessible only within 2 hours either side of low tide. You need a suitable 4WD and a vehicle access permit, which costs A$61.80 for up to one month in 2026. Pack for delays and do not push through water you cannot read.

The walk

The boardwalk is 700 m return and takes about 30 minutes at grade 3. It is nominally open 24 hours a day. Allow extra time for photos and for waiting if the pools are crowded. The route is not suited to a quick dash with a tide turning.

The pools

At mid tide the sea pushes into the rock pools and they foam. At low tide a path leads down steep, slippery steps to the beach. Wear shoes with a grip and keep one hand free on the steps.

The rest of the day

The Champagne Pools sit on the same beach as the Maheno wreck and Eli Creek. Plan the order of stops around the tide, not around the map.

Swimming safely

A rock pool next to the open sea is not a swimming pool.

QPWS advises against ocean swimming on K'gari. The beaches are unpatrolled, currents are strong, and sharks and marine stingers are present. No lifeguard service is listed for the Champagne Pools, and no maximum wave height is published. That leaves the decision with you.

Before you get in, watch the pools for a few minutes. If waves are washing hard over the rim, stay out. Never jump or dive into water you cannot see into, keep children within arm's reach, and do not go in alone. If you want a calmer swim, the freshwater lakes inland and Eli Creek are the usual alternatives.

A calm morning does not tell you about the afternoon. Swell can change between two visits, and the tide keeps moving while you are in the water.

Indian Head nearby

From the Middle Rocks you can see Indian Head, called Tukkee Wurroo, a headland on the same coast. The walking track to the top is closed because of severe erosion. The closure notice runs to 18 November 2026 and no reopening date is promised, so do not plan a climb. Stay off the headland if you see a barrier.

The headland still makes a good photo from the beach. Keep to the sign-posted areas and do not climb the cliffs around it.

Champagne Pools: frequently asked questions

Can you swim in the Champagne Pools?

QPWS describes swimming only in safe conditions and advises against ocean swimming on K'gari. Watch the water first, stay out if waves wash hard over the rim, and keep children close.

Is it only safe at low tide?

There is no such general rule. QPWS names mid tide for the foaming effect and low tide for the steps down to the beach. Low tide for driving is a separate point: the beach drive is open within 2 hours either side of low tide.

How long is the walk to the Champagne Pools?

The boardwalk is 700 m return and takes about 30 minutes. It is graded 3 and nominally open 24 hours a day.

Do I need a 4WD?

Yes if you drive yourself: a suitable 4WD and a vehicle access permit (A$61.80 for up to one month in 2026). Otherwise join a guided 4WD tour and check that the pools are a stop.

Is there an entry fee or a booking system for the pools?

No separate entry fee or reservation is listed for the pools. Costs come from the permit, the ferry, camping and tours.

Can I climb Indian Head?

No. The walking track is closed because of severe erosion, with the closure notice running to 18 November 2026. Check the park alerts before you go.
