Lake McKenzie at a glance

Lake McKenzie is a perched freshwater lake: it sits in a hollow in the dunes rather than being fed by a stream. The park authority calls the place Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) day-use area, using the name of the Butchulla, the traditional owners of K'gari. Short paths lead from the fenced picnic areas to the water, where you can swim.

The lake is inland, so you reach it on sand tracks and not along the beach. That makes it a long day for a self-drive trip. Do not count on lifeguards, and do not expect a risk-free swim. Treat the water, the dunes and the wildlife with the same care as anywhere else on the island.

Rules at the lake

The day-use area has a few firm rules. They protect the lake and the people who use it.

  • Food and drink: only water is allowed at the shore. Eat in the fenced picnic areas.
  • Drones: flying in the restricted area, which includes the shore, the car park and the day-use area, needs permission. If you carry a drone, keep it stowed and closed.
  • Dunes: do not run, jump, slide or board down the dunes, and do not dive into the lake. Serious spinal injuries have been recorded on K'gari.
  • Dingoes: keep at least 20 m away and never feed or lure them. In January 2025 a 4-year-old child was bitten on the shoulder in shallow water at the lake. The authority reported superficial injuries and sent more rangers. Keep children within arm's reach.

When to go and what to bring

A short list that saves a lot of trouble.

Aim for the edges of the day

The authority names 10:30 to 15:00 as the busiest period. Arriving before or after those hours should give you more room at the shore.

Carry your own water

Bring drinking water and sun protection. The fenced picnic areas are where you eat, and food and drink other than water stay away from the lake.

Check conditions first

Park alerts list closures and track works. An open day-use area does not mean every road leading to it is open, so ask your tour operator or check the alerts before you drive.

Other lakes and walks nearby

The Central Lakes area has more than one lake, and the park authority describes several short options around it. They are worth knowing if you have a full day.

  • Central Station: a day-use area in the rainforest at the upper Wanggoolba Creek, 9.4 km from Eurong and 800 m from the Central Station campground. The Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk is partly closed in 2026 because of a fallen tree, and the western part can be walked as an out-and-back route.
  • Pile Valley: a 4 km circuit of about 2 hours, difficulty 4, through satinay rainforest. The park authority lists the Pile Valley circuit as still open while the boardwalk repair continues.
  • Basin Lake: 5.6 km return from Central Station, about 3 hours, with a steep climb at the start.
  • Lake Boomanjin: the park authority calls it the largest perched lake in the world, with an area of 200 ha.

Distances on sand tracks take longer than the map suggests, and the speed limit on inland tracks is 30 km/h unless signs say otherwise. Leave plenty of daylight for the drive back to the beach or the campground.

Lake McKenzie: frequently asked questions

Can you swim in Lake McKenzie?

Yes. The park authority describes swimming at the lake. Do not count on lifeguards, so you swim at your own risk. Do not dive in, and do not jump or slide down the dunes into the water.

Do I need a 4WD to get there?

To drive yourself, yes: a high-clearance 4WD with low range. If you do not have one, a guided tour is the other way. Check that the tour lists Lake McKenzie in its itinerary.

Can I bring food to the lake?

Only water is allowed at the shore. Eat and drink in the fenced picnic areas. This also helps keep dingoes away from food.

Are drones allowed?

Flying a drone in the restricted area, which covers the shore, the car park and the day-use area, needs permission. If you carry one, keep it stowed and closed.

Is there wheelchair access?

There is access to the toilets and picnic area with assistance. There is no wheelchair access to the lake itself.
