K'gari weather at a glance

K'gari (Fraser Island) has a warm coastal climate. The figures below are long-term monthly averages, not a forecast. They come from the Bureau of Meteorology station at Sandy Cape Lighthouse, at the northern tip of the island, and record mean daily maximums, mean daily minimums and mean monthly rainfall.

The temperature record runs from 1907 and the rainfall record from 1871, with gaps, so the two series have different lengths. The latest data used here run to 31 July 2026. This guide is independent and is not run by the weather service or the park service. Use the averages to plan the season, and check the current forecast before each day on the island.

The station is on the coast at the northern tip, so it does not describe every spot on the island, and it is not the weather at Hervey Bay airport. The values are averages. A given day can be hotter, cooler or wetter.

Our pick: a shorter day on the water

Our take: a half-day option from Hervey Bay for when you would rather not commit to a full day on the sand.

The best time to visit K'gari

The averages point to winter and spring if you want it drier and cooler.

June to October

Rainfall drops from 107.6 mm in June to 50.6 mm in September. Highs sit between 21.2 °C and 26.1 °C, which suits walking and sightseeing. That suits the walks to Lake Wabby and the Pile Valley circuit. Dry does not mean rain-free.

September to November

Warmth builds while rain stays modest, with 50.6 to 72.9 mm a month. The dingo rearing season runs from 1 September to 30 November 2026, so expect pups on tracks and beaches and drive slowly.

December to March

These months are the hottest and wettest, with highs of 28.5 to 29.4 °C and 98.9 to 168.0 mm of rain. Great Walk camps can be booked only 14 days ahead from 1 November to 28 February because of fire risk, and short-notice closures are possible.

Whales from Hervey Bay

Regional tourism information lists whale watching from July to October. Operators decide their own season end, so confirm dates with the operator.

What the weather changes on the island

Tides and swimming matter more than the sky.

Air temperature says little about the sea. Park staff advise against swimming in the ocean in any month, because the beaches are unpatrolled, currents are strong, and sharks and marine stingers are present. No safe swimming window follows from the temperature table. Monthly sea temperatures and a local stinger season are not covered here.

Rain affects more than comfort. Wet sand and heavy surf change beach conditions, and the tide decides when you can drive. QPWS recommends driving from 2 hours before to 2 hours after low tide and avoiding the 2 hours either side of high tide. Strong weather can close the beach even at low tide, so allow time.

Pack sun protection and a rain layer whatever the month, and bring water.
